The investigation into the mass shooting at Brown University that tragically left two students dead and nine wounded took a major turn when sources confirmed the identity of the person of interest.

CNN has heard from multiple law enforcement sources that the individual taken into custody is 24-year-old Benjamin Ericson of Wisconsin. Although officials are withholding the name publicly to protect the integrity of the investigation, the focus has now shifted to understanding the background and motive of the alleged shooter.

Capture and Key Evidence

Ericson was detained at 3:30 a.m. at a hotel in Coventry, Rhode Island, located approximately 25 minutes from the Brown University campus.

Authorities confirmed seizing key evidence during the arrest:

  • Weapons: Ericson was found with two handguns: a revolver and a small Glock.
  • Laser Targeting System: The Glock handgun was equipped with a laser targeting system, which is considered an unusual feature and a point of interest for investigators.

The current work for authorities is centered on tying all three elements together: connecting the shell casings from the scene to the weapons found, and analyzing for traces of DNA. Officials are being careful and thorough to ensure a “successful prosecution”.

The Suspect’s Decorated Military Background

Information gathered from Ericson’s reported LinkedIn profile reveals extensive military experience, which may explain a “level of proficiency” during the deadly attack.

  • U.S. Army Service: Ericson is a decorated U.S. Army soldier, having served between high school and college.
  • Elite Honor Guard: He was assigned to Fort Myer and served as part of an elite honor guard responsible for highly formal Army ceremonies, including service at Arlington National Cemetery.
  • Infantry & Training: As an infantry soldier, his basic training would have included proficiency in shooting both a rifle and a handgun. Reports also indicate he passed sniper training and had experience with firearms instruction.

The Unanswered Motive

The central question that authorities are currently facing is why a non-student, non-resident individual traveled from Wisconsin to Rhode Island to target the university campus.

The shooting took place in a building where a review session for a class was taking place, with approximately 60 people inside. The investigation will focus on whether Ericson was utilizing his military training to target the specific building or class.

In the meantime, the state has ordered flags at government buildings to be lowered to half staff to mourn the two slain students. Despite the tragedy, the community is rallying together in a show of support for those impacted by the violence.
